1) Widen your stance angle
As said before, your flexibility is the on the decline once you’re past your prime but you can make up for this by widening the angle of your stance so that you can make a full turn with ease and get a good backswing at the same time. To do so, pull your trailing leg a little further out from your stance- preferably your trailing leg should be at the 11 o’clock position and the lead at 1- so as to provide sufficient room for a full swing as well.
2) Turn away from the ball
It’s often the norm in golf to hit the ball whilst looking at it and staying relatively still however this technique is ill-advised if for senior golfers. Instead, you should be making a deep turn by turning away from the ball and to do that you’ll need to pull your right foot back a little whilst facing the ball. You can still watch it all the way but be sure to create more motion for a comfortable swing.
3) Take a step further back from the tee for more power
Power is another attribute of your game that seeps out with time and consequently getting good distance on the ball becomes quite challenging. That will not be the case though if you increase the clearance between you and the ball particularly when you’re hitting it off a tee. By stepping back sufficiently so that the ball is at the start of your upswing, you can easily get clean contact and good distance with little effort.
4) Keep your weight on the lead foot
Getting a good lift on the lead foot during the backswing and consequently shifting your weight back and forth with the swing is the standard for basic golfing but it is best if you keep the pressure slightly focused on your lead foot. Doing this will ensure you are ahead of the contact at all times thereby enabling you to get a powerful follow through easily.
5) Cock your wrists early
With flexibility headed for the exit door, you might lose the ability to pull your arms sufficiently back to allow for natural cocking at the end of the backswing. You can get around this by cocking your wrists earlier than usual and instead of doing so near the top of the turn as is usually the case, you can tighten your grasp about one foot from impact so as to keep the strain on the joints to a minimum.
6) Release your wrists at the point of impact
For added power and extra whip, release your arms as you start to go through the ball. This transition from a cocked position to a more relaxed state will trigger a snapping action availing the aforementioned benefits.
7) Let the shaft come in closer to you
Most of the time people begin the backswing when the shaft is almost in an upright position which makes the swing more strenuous as you are pushing at it rather than going with the flow. You’ll need to collapse your shaft into your trailing shoulder and let it rest nearer to you so as to achieve that. Also, ensure the club isn’t up too high and coming in close instead it should be more to your side and coming in close.
8) Finish with a fold
Don’t go for the customary wrap-around finish rather let your arms collapse naturally so that your elbow folds instead of extending strenuously into your neck. In other words, aim to get as little curvature as possible with a straight-up finish.
